The poem was originally written for and delivered at President Bill Clinton’s inauguration in 1993. She also recorded spoken albums of her poetry, including “On the Pulse of the Morning,” for which she won a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album. She wrote numerous poetry volumes, such as the Pulitzer Prize-nominated Just Give me a Drink of Water 'fore I Diiie (1971), as well as several essay collections. Angelou eventually published six more autobiographies, culminating in 2013’s Mom & Me & Mom. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings has been translated into numerous languages and has sold over a million copies worldwide. Many schools sought to ban the book for its frank depiction of sexual abuse, but it is credited with helping other abuse survivors tell their stories. Her tale of personal strength amid childhood trauma and racism resonated with readers and was nominated for the National Book Award. In 1969, Angelou published I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, an autobiography of her early life. She also became active in the Civil Rights Movement and served as the northern coordinator of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, a prominent African American advocacy organization In 1950, African American writers in New York City formed the Harlem Writers Guild to nurture and support the publication of Black authors. In the 1950s, she performed professionally in the US, Europe, and northern Africa, and sold albums of her recordings. She adopted a form of his surname and kept it throughout her life, though the marriage ended in divorce in 1952.Īngelou was also noted for her talents as a singer and dancer, particularly in the calypso and cabaret styles. In 1949, she married Tosh Angelos, an electrician in the US Navy. She graduated from Mission High School in the summer of 1944 and soon after gave birth to her only child, Clyde Bailey (Guy) Johnson.Īfter graduation, Angelou undertook a series of odd jobs to support herself and her son. Angelou was employed for a semester but then decided to return to school. She was accepted for the position and became the first African American woman to work as a streetcar conductor in San Francisco. Because she was under the legal working age, she wrote that she was 19. Finally, the company relented and handed her an application. Every day for three weeks, she requested a job application, but was denied. However, Angelou was barred from applying at first because of her race. Many men had left their jobs to join the services, enabling women to fill them. Determined to gain employment, despite being only 15 years old, she decided to apply for the position of a streetcar conductor. However, her application was rejected because of her involvement in the California Labor School, which was said to have Communist ties. When war broke out, Angelou applied to join the Women’s Army Corps. She attended George Washington High School and took dance and drama courses at the California Labor School. Prior to the start of World War II, Angelou moved back in with her mother, who at this time was living in Oakland, California. When she returned to Arkansas, she took an interest in poetry and memorized works by Shakespeare and Poe. Throughout her childhood, she wrote essays, poetry, and kept a journal. During her mutism and into her teens, she again lived with her grandmother in Arkansas.Īngelou’s interest in the written word and the English language was evident from an early age. Believing that her confession of the trauma had a hand in the man’s death, Angelou became mute for six years. He was later jailed and then killed when released from jail. Returning to her mother’s care briefly at the age of seven, Angelou was raped by her mother’s boyfriend. Her older brother, Bailey, gave Angelou her nickname “Maya.” Due to her parents’ tumultuous marriage and subsequent divorce, Angelou went to live with her paternal grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas at an early age. On April 4, 1928, Marguerite Ann Johnson, known to the world as Maya Angelou, was born in St. She was best known for her unique and pioneering autobiographical writing style. PS: As for why the headset would even lose track when it is not being taken off, just because its cameras can't find enough "trackable objects" and "corners", I can't tell - that thing has accelerometers, gyroscopes, a magnetometer, and several cameras. The solution to this problem is to change the DCS VR code so that no uncommanded realignment of the two coordinate systems is performed. This is easily confirmed by moving away from the normal player position to reposition the VR headset as close as possible to, which looks pretty much like a normal cockpit perspective again: Therefore, one would assume that the head position in DCS should be roughly where it was before the intermittent tracking loss.īut this is not the case, because DCS has realigned the two coordinate systems so that =, which makes no sense, because there is no reason to assume that the headset coordinate system has changed. When the position tracking is later reestablished by the headset, the headset starts reporting valid coordinates again:Īs it can be seen in the picture, the coordinates are again very close to the ones that were reported before the position tracking was lost intermittently. Then, whenever the position tracking is lost, the headset stops reporting any (valid) coordinates. Here is a picture of the initial position in the cockpit, with VR coordinates : These coordinates are aligned to when everything is working properly (in other words, = ). In my case, the VR coordinates for my normal head position in the cockpit are roughly. This is also essentially what the "View - Recenter VR headset" function does. For a normal cockpit view in VR, whatever coordinates the VR headset is reporting when the player's head is in its normal position must be aligned with the game coordinates. Let's call the head position coordinates in the game world and the VR coordinates, and let's assume that the normal head position in the cockpit is at coordinates. There are two sets of coordinates, one in the game world and one that is reported by the VR headset. In both cases, the position tracking is lost intermittently and later reestablished, and the effect on the head position in the cockpit is the same. I could reproduce the same problem that I had with intermittent tracking problems by taking the headset off, waiting for it to reset itself, and then putting it on again. Tl dr: The problem is caused by an uncommanded realignment of coordinate systems by DCS, explanation below. I have attached a video capture of what the problem looks like. I tried "recenter VR headset", resetting the camera position, saving the cockpit angles, and a few other view-related things, but all to no avail. I first encountered this problem a couple days ago, so it may be caused by one of the last updates. To rule out the possibilty that this is yet another problem of the extremely buggy Oculus drivers, I flew a turboprop around for over an hour in the same region in another flight simulator, but encountered no VR problems at all, so I am convinced that this bug is in the DCS VR code. On average, it happens every 10 minutes - sometimes it would happen twice per minute, sometimes it would work for 20 minutes before failing again. I tested this by resetting my position so that I would fly the aircraft from behind the seat (as if I were in a backseat). The position jump is not relative to the current head position, it is absolute, meaning that even if I intentionally reset my headset position so that I end up in a different position in the cockpit while flying, I still end up in the same location after the sudden jump. This seems to happen with all aircraft (so far, I have tested with the F-16 and the Su-33), and the location that it jumps to is the same every time, but is a different for each aircraft (e.g., into a forward-left position of the cockpit in the F-16, straight forward way in front of the HUD in the Su-33). Without any apparent reason, the head position suddenly jumps to a different and nonsensical location in the cockpit. The research team also evaluated the effects of this approach on children’s physical activity and psychosocial health. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the influence of pedometers, in combination with individualized step goals, to improve children’s weight loss during behavioral treatment. While previous studies have investigated the impact of pedometer use on weight loss among both adult and child participants, the integration of behavior-change strategies with pedometer use is a novel approach. Wearable activity trackers, including pedometers, are a simple and inexpensive means for children to self-monitor their physical-activity levels. Orange tabbies are known for being Velcro cats The M marking is embedded in the same gene that gives them their tabby pattern. However, science has a slightly less magical answer to why orange tabby cats are rocking that M: it’s in their DNA. There are plenty of myths and legends floating around as to how that M came to be there, with claims that it represents everyone from the Virgin Mary to Mohammed, the founder of Islam. Look closely at an orange tabby cat’s forehead and you’ll notice that they sport a very distinctive looking ‘M’. Weitzman says there’s zero competition when it comes to which kind of cat is the most gregarious, with orange tabbies a clear winner. If you’ve ever owned an orange tabby cat, you probably know that these guys are definitely the Chatty Cathy’s of the cat world! According to Gary Weitzman, head veterinarian at the San Diego Humane Society, cat personalities are tied to coat color. The pigment pheomelanin is what gives an orange tabby cat their coloring and it’s the same pigment that’s responsible for causing red hair in humans. It turns out that Annie and Garfield have a lot more in common than we first thought. A specific pigment is responsible for their color Within the agouti gene, there are four different types of tabby patterns that can occur: mackerel (tiger-like stripes), ticked (hair that alternates with light and dark bands), spotted, and classic (which gives a swirled look). Did you know that orange cats with solid-colored coats don’t exist? It’s true! That’s because all tabby cats regardless of their color carry the agouti gene which is responsible for creating a patterned effect on their coats. The third method is to support a virtual cam girl.
